HHISP Women’s Committee

Since 2012, a group of Abt JTA staff and advisors based in the Port Moresby office have been meeting together as a part of the Abt JTA Women’s Committee. The group has several formal and informal objectives, both as a professional, community and social support mechanism, and has been enthusiastically involved in a range of activities since it started.

Reflective of Abt JTA’s mission and values, gender is a key consideration in improving the quality of life and economic well-being of the people with whom we work – including our own teams and the communities in which they live and work.

Members of the committee have been involved in fundraising events; health and well-being awareness activities; and internal training and peer support on a range of issues. The group is particularly focus on improving and supporting women’s health and well-being, in line with the core objectives of the HHISP.

Their activities have been as diverse as supporting local community organisations like the Susu Mothers, by participating in training around women’s health and breastfeeding awareness, or showing their support by participating in mobile breast self-examination activities in local areas.

The benefits of the group have also been felt within the Abt JTA team, as volunteers and members take on responsibility for developing sessions participating in activities, it has provided team members with an opportunity to grow in confidence and to develop in the organisation by working together on these issues.
